About

Energy that powers Australia. People that power us!

Hartfield Energy Australia is one of Australia's largest downstream-petroleum and convenience-retail businesses. We refine and distribute fuel through a national wholesale network, supply Australia's defence forces and major industrial customers, and operate around 300 service stations across every state and territory under the Hartfield brand. Our Geelong Refinery has been running for over 60 years and remains one of only two major refineries on Australia's east coast.

The energy industry is changing fast — toward lower-carbon fuels, electrification, and smarter operations — and we're changing with it. Whether you're studying engineering, business, environmental science, IT, retail management, or the trades, there's a place at Hartfield where you can build a career that matters.

Why work with us?

We organise the Hartfield experience around four pillars. Each one shapes how we hire, how we develop our people, and how we work day-to-day.

Grow

We back our people to grow. From day one we invest in formal learning, on-the-job mentoring, and the kind of exposure that gets you in front of senior leaders early. Our graduate and apprentice programs run for 18–24 months with rotations across operations, commercial, and corporate functions, so you find out what fits you before you commit. We pay for industry certifications, fund postgraduate study where it aligns with your role, and run a structured "Career Conversation" twice a year with every team member.

Belong

Hartfield is a great place to be yourself. We trust the positive intentions of our people, listen first, and amplify the voices of those who don't always get heard in our industry. Our Inclusion Council brings together employees from across the business — refinery operators, retail managers, traders, engineers, IT, finance — to shape the policies that affect everyone. We're a signatory to the Australian Diversity Council's Workplace Inclusion Index and report transparently on gender, cultural background, and accessibility metrics each year.

Thrive

Employment at Hartfield comes with a wide range of benefits designed to support you at work and at home.

  • Market-competitive pay plus performance incentives across all levels.

  • 26 weeks of non-gendered paid parental leave, usable within two years of birth or adoption.

  • Superannuation paid at the full-time rate during parental leave and on return-to-work part-time, for up to five years from the child's birth.

  • Confidential counselling and mental-fitness support for you and your family, through our partnerships with leading wellbeing providers.

  • Discounted fuel and convenience purchases at the Hartfield retail network.

  • Salary packaging, novated leasing, and health-fund corporate plans.

  • Flexible working: hybrid by default for office roles; structured roster flexibility on shift roles.

How to apply

We hire across four entry pathways:

  • Apprenticeships at the Geelong Refinery in Electrical Instrumentation and Mechanical Fitting. Four-year programs that combine TAFE study with on-the-job training. Applications open February each year.

  • Graduate Program for university leavers across engineering, commercial, and corporate streams. Applications open March; the program starts in February the following year.

  • Trade and operator roles at the refinery and across the broader supply network — ongoing recruitment year-round.

  • Retail management roles in our service-station network, with structured progression from Assistant Manager through to Area Manager.

Applications are made through this Hartfield careers page or via the FacilityVR platform. We aim to acknowledge every application within five business days. If you'd like to talk to us before applying, our Career Events (listed below) include refinery tours, technical Q&As, and informal "ask us anything" sessions for university students.
